Carpal Tunnel is a common painful condition that affects the hands and arms. The most common symptoms are tingling, pain, and numbness of the thumb and index but the middle and ring fingers can also get affected. Weakness is also a common symptom but tends to develop later. The most common cause is compression of the median nerve. Risk factors include but are not limited to inflammatory conditions, obesity, jobs that require typing, and nerve damaging conditions. Diagnosis is made by history taking, examination, and nerve conduction test. Treatment includes splinting, anti-inflammatory, steroid injection, and surgical decompression of the carpal ligament.
